The Films:
Berlin Beirut
Germany 2003
Director: Myrna Maakaron, 23 min
Berlin and Beirut were occupied, destructed, divided, reconstructed and today people still say "East and West" in both cities. Through the whole film, Berlin and Beirut become one city. One space. A space where you feel the weight of the past and the lightness of life sharing with Myrna her stories, adventures and memories.
Nu te supara, dar ...(Don't get me wrong)
Romania 2007
Director: Adina Pintilie, 50 min
Documentary films focusing on disciplinary institutions like prison and psychiatric hospitals usually meet people from the very margins of society, where life is dark, wretched and shocking. "Nu te supăra, dar ... " on the other hand, the debut film of Adina Pintilie, leads directly to heaven. Even God (at least one) is already there! Alexandru imagines a scientifically proven theory of radiation that will supposedly win him the Noble Prize as the discoverer of the rain-stop principle. This is doubted by Ocsy, his equally schizophrenic friend, who sweeps the steps of the church tower every day and talks to God himself. Both go about their daily work with absolute grace and dignity. It is an otherworldly happiness in this world that Pintilie conjures ups with a sure instinct, using precise, slow shots at the Calugareni Neuropsychiatric Centre.
