The New Deal for Feature Documentaries

Doc Alliance is a partnership which emerged as a result of the co-operative effort of five key European documentary film festivals – CPH:DOX Copenhagen, DOK Leipzig, IDFF Jihlava, Planete Doc Review Warsaw and VISIONS DU REEL Nyon. The aim of the Doc Alliance initiative is to support the diversity of feature documentaries and to convince audiences of the fascinating, moving and instructive aspects of the cinéma du reel where reality surpasses fiction and becomes spectacular.

Doc Alliance was born with the awareness that new initiatives are needed to promote remarkable films to a general market that is less permeable to their circulation and commercialisation and to approach various audiences in every conceivable manner, ranging from cinema, television, DVD to VOD, and other networks. Its objective is to create an inventive and dynamic distribution platform for filmmakers and producers by offering attractive alternatives, debates, choices and perspectives.

DOC ALLIANCE SELECTION

The DOC ALLIANCE SELECTION represents five high-quality films, one selected by each of the Doc Alliance festival partners. The films tour at the five Festivals starting at VISIONS DU REEL Nyon. At the end of the year an international jury decides about the “Doc Alliance Award”. In 2009 the Award will be handed over during the DOK Leipzig. The five national markets support the films at their festivals and in their theatrical, TV and DVD distribution.

DOC ALLIANCE FILMS

www.docalliancefilms.com is the new online portal of Doc Alliance for Video on Demand offering permanent access to 250 outstanding documentaries selected by the five partner festivals. Twenty new films are added monthly and these can be acquired through streaming or download.

About the festivals:

CPH:DOX Kopenhagen

CPH:DOX, Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, is the largest documentary film festival in Scandinavia. Each year the festival fills the Copenhagen cinemas with a selection of more than 150 documentary films from around the world. During the ten festival days, CPH:DOX also presents five whole days of professional seminars and provides an international forum and meeting place with the newly founded DOX:FORUM.

VISIOINS DU RÉEL Nyon

is the unique cinéma du réel event in Switzerland. Committed films, intimate portraits, in-depth reports, video art, the Festival explores the fantastic diversity of the documentary world. Let yourself in for a week of surprises with an original programme and discover the multiple facets of the world as it is experienced. Visions du Réel is also a meeting place where spectators and filmmakers interact in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Screenings, debates and evening events are in the programme of the 15th edition which also marks the 40th anniversary of the Nyon film festival.

IDFF Jihlava

is one of the most significant festivals of creative documentary in Central and Eastern Europe. Presenting films of daring themes and distinct authorial style, its essential effort is to lead a dialogue with both these films and their authors. During the festival, films are accompanied by discussions with the audience, workshops, panel discussions as well as professional meetings or a wide section for film professionals. The six festival days are followed by a systematic all-year effort at further promotion and reflection of the documentary film. Festival echoes as well as regular screenings of selected films in partner cinemas are supplemented by expert publication activities. Within the last thirteen years, IDFF Jihlava has accomplished its motto „Thinking through film!“

Planete Doc Review Warschau

The PLANETE DOC REVIEW Festival presents a selection of outstanding documentaries from the last 18 months, as well as thematic sections linked to discussion panels. The organisers believe that documentary may be a connecting factor with high-profile film art, as well as a reason for deeper reflection upon the world today. Therefore, it can influence both opinion and behaviour, and may also be a factor in triggering change. Criteria for selection is the principle of high film culture and originality of style. Within the festival, we try to present documentary films and artistic trends such as radio documentaries, photography, literary reportage etc, and the programme for professionals will be constantly extended.

DOK Leipzig

is the largest German and one of the leading international festivals for artistic documentary and animated films. Traditionally, the Leipzig Festival stands for films advocating peace and human dignity. In view of its varied and exciting history it celebrates freedom of mind and speech as well as pointedly illustrated images. High-quality art house cinema, superbly narrated stories, a critical eye, subtle observation, tracing back history and scrutinizing the "memory of images" shape the Leipzig Festival’s character and diversity.
